Middle School

A visit to the Museum of Arts and Sciences opens a world of exploration to your class.  With your visit to the Museum you will recieve both pre- and post-visit activites for all that you do at the Museum to connect your field trip to the classroom.   Here are some of the Middle School GPS that are dealt with on every visit to the Museum; refer to the pre- and post- materials to see a complete list:

ELA6RC3 The student acquires new vocabulary in each content area and uses it correctly.

M6M2 Students will use appropriate units of measure for finding length, perimeter, area, and volume and will express each quantity using the appropriate unit.

S7CS1 Students will explore the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and will exhibit these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works.

M8G1 Students will understand and apply the properties of parallel and perpendicular lines and understand the meaning of congruence.

The Museum provides a variety of unique experiences and opportunities for your students to learn.  Select any combination of programs or current exhibits that would enhance your classroom experience. Use the links below to view information on specific programs and exhibits and correlations to the Georgia Performance Standards.

Featured Exhibits

Head to Toe

March 28-August 31, 2008

Newberry  Gallery

Are you an herbivore or a carnivore? What can an x-ray see? Just how hard does your heart work? What do fingerprints do? The answers to these questions and more await you in the Museum's latest exhibit!

The human body is a fascinating and complex machine, with each of its many parts fulfilling a unique and interesting function. Head to Toe, based on Pacific Science Center's nationally acclaimed Science on Wheels: Blood and Guts exhibition, educated visitors about five bodily topics: skeletons, organs, the senses, general health and general body facts. Compare skulls and backbones to learn how each one works for different animals. Learn about your individual fingerprints and smell detector cells in your nose.

Live Animal Program

For Grades 6,7, and 8 we focus our animal programming to most closely work with your classroom needs, providing in-depth and up-close exposure to native and exotic animals using our live animal collection.  See what special programs can be done to connect to your classroom.

S7L1 Students will investigate the diversity of living organisms and how they can be compared scientifically.

Planetarium Shows

Below are Planetarium programs that we recommend for Middle School Classes and the Georgia Performance Standards dealt with through that Planetarium program.
There are many other shows that can also be used during your field trip; please call for more information.

Through The Eyes Of Hubble

Marvel at the breathtaking clarity of fabulous images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Witness the evidence for solar systems in formation, relive the catastrophic impact of a comet with Jupiter, reach out to galaxies at the boundaries of the known universe, and more.

Related GPS:

S6E1 Students will explore current scientific views of the universe and how those views evolved.

S8P5 Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature.

Dark Matter

What is the mysterious "dark matter?" Up to 98% of the material in the universe may be made up of it, yet no one knows what it is! The mysterious substance may hold clues to the history and ultimate fate of the universe.

S6E1 Students will explore current scientific views of the universe and how those views evolved.

S8P5 Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature.

New Explorations Of The Solar System

Learn about some of the upcoming space exploration missions from NASA, the European Space Agency, and others. This live planetarium show will give audiences up-to-the-minute information about such efforts as the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Mercury MESSENGER, and the Cassini mission to Saturn.

Explorers Of Mauna Kea

Atop a dormant volcano in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on the big island of Hawaii sit some of the most advanced tools for exploring the cosmos. This is where astronomers use the world’s biggest telescopes to study the universe. Tour these astronomical instruments and marvel at their discoveries. The program includes an interactive section that lets audience members become parts of a giant telescope.

Environmental Education

Nature Trail Tour

Students are guided on the Sweetgum Nature Trail and use tools such as a magnifier, specimen nets, and binoculars to observe and learn about plants and animals.

Related GPS:

S7L4 Students will examine the dependence of organisms on one another and their environments

S7L5 Students will examine the evolution of living organisms through inherited characteristics that promote survival of organisms and the survival of successive generations of their offspring.

Below are activities that can be done in conjunction with a Nature Trail Tour or on their own during your visit to the Museum.

A Drop in the Bucket

By estimating and calculating the percent of available fresh water on Earth, students understand that this resource is limited and must be conserved

S6E3 Students will recognize the significant role of water in earth processes

Get the Ground Water Picture

Students will "get the ground water picture" and learn about basic ground water principles as they create their own geologic cross section or earth window.
