High School

A visit to the Museum of Arts and Sciences opens a world of exploration to your class.  With your visit to the Museum you will recieve both pre- and post-visit activites for all that you do at the Museum to connect your field trip to the classroom.   Here are some of the High School GPS that are dealt with on every visit to the Museum; refer to the pre- and post- materials to see a complete list:

MA1D2. Students will use the basic laws of probability.

MA2G3. Students will investigate the relationships between lines and circles.

The Museum provides a variety of unique experiences and opportunities for your students to learn.  Select any combination of programs or current exhibits that would enhance your classroom experience. Use the links below to view information on specific programs and exhibits and correlations to the Georgia Performance Standards.

Featured Exhibits

Gullah-Geechee:An Enduring Culture

January 25-May 4, 2008

South Gallery

West African slaves provided essential labor for colonial rice plantations. Their knowledge of rice cultivation allowed the plants to succeed. The Gullah (South Carolina) and Geechee (Georgia) people lived in isolated areas and blended their African culture with the skills needed to survive in the new land. Stories and songs were used to teach lessons to children and West African and American techniques melded together in cooking. Customs from Africa, the West Indies, and America developed into a new culture. Explore the Gullah/Geechee legacy from its beginnings to its place in a National Historic Corridor.

Live Animal Program

Ecosystems and Beyond

Using the varierty of animals in the Museum's live collection, students will see up close and personally how individual animals fit into their respective ecosystems, with ecosystems being examined not only from here in Georgia, but also using exotic species from around the world.

SB4 Students will assess the dependence of all organisms on one another and the flow of energy and matter within their ecosystems.

Planetarium Shows

Below are Planetarium programs that we recommend for High School classes and the Georgia Performance Standards dealt with through that Planetarium program.  Many more shows can be booked to fit your classroom needs; please call for more information.

What is the mysterious "dark matter?" Up to 98% of the material in the universe may be made up of it, yet no one knows what it is! The mysterious substance may hold clues to the history and ultimate fate of the universe.

SP1 Students will analyze the relationships between force, mass, gravity, and the motion of objects.

SP2 Students will evaluate the significance of energy in understanding the structure of matter and the universe.

SP6 The student will describe the corrections to Newtonian physics given by quantum mechanics and relativity when matter is very small, moving fast compared to the speed of light, or very large.

Lunar Odyssey

From myths that tried to explain its changing appearance, to the first telescopic views of its rugged face, observers have wondered: where did the moon come from, and what would it be like to visit there? Journey to the moon to probe its maria and mystery, its highlands and history, its rocks and role in our future.

Space 101

Learn the coordinate systems that astronomers use to study the sky. Find celestial marvels—such as multiple star systems, nebulae, and galaxies—hidden in constellations. Discover how the planetarium recreates objects in space.
